Vegan Dundee

Exchange street is quickly becoming a vegan hotspot with various vegan options in its cafes and Heart Space Wholefoods. We headed to a Dundee vegan favourite, Flame Tree, for some lunch this week.  Located near the centre of town and parking on street, this the perfect spot for a sit in or take away lunch.

We were spoilt for choice here as there was a fully vegan menu within the main menu.  Jilly went for the toasted fajita wrap and I had a baked potato with falafel, spinach, tomatoes and hummus.  Our food arrived quickly and did not disappoint.  Both meals were fresh and delicious, Jilly especially loved her wrap.  The portions were huge and we had no room for cake but the staff let us know that there were five vegan cake options including an avocado chocolate cake.  All the cakes on the counter looked amazing.  Jilly had an oat milk latte and the staff let her know that they had; coconut milk, almond milk, oat milk and soya milk available.

A busy little cafe, we were lucky to get a seat during the lunchtime rush, so booking in advance may be advisable.  However, you can easily pick up a takeaway for your lunch here too.  There was a kids menu which had a few vegan options and cheese on this menu could be substituted for Violife so it's the perfect lunch spot for little vegans.  This was a fantastic lunch and just over £16 for two meals and two drinks it was fantastic value for money.  We will definitely be back to taste some of the vegan cakes soon.

*Update 23rd May* we just had to add a little update to include the amazing milkshakes which we tried since writing this post. We had the delicious mint chocolate and oreo flavours made with oat milk and a very convincing dairy free whipped cream. Such a treat!

The White Goose opened it's doors in November, a lovely new addition to the Waterfront which we were keen to try out for a Saturday date night.

It was very busy when we arrived but luckily we had booked as the people ahead of us were told to come back later. My husband David had actually bought an Itison voucher for here before Christmas, which was for a sharing board or two grazers with a glass of Prosecco, wine or beer each. We were offered the Prosecco but our waitress didn't know which of the drinks were vegan friendly and offered to read the labels, in the end we opted for beers which we knew were fine from Barnivore.

There wasn't a vegan sharing board so we each had a grazer; Moroccan Chickpea Stew for David and the Pan Seared Long Stem Broccoli for me. We decided to add the Moroccan Tofu to share too as it sounded so good. It was a little disappointing though as there were only 4 pieces of tofu in it, not a big portion compared to the grazers. David found the stew a bit too spicy for him but the broccoli was delicious - lots of lemon and garlic. We then shared a yummy raspberry and almond tart.

The White Goose is a great place for relaxed dining, we were there very early evening and it switched from more of a cafe style to bar as the sun went down with the lighting lowered and candles lit. It would be nice to see more of the sides suitable for vegans but it's great to see another new place open with quite a few vegan options on the menu.

Last week we headed back to Beans and Berries, we’ve been before separately but decided to tuck into some vegan pancakes together...

Beans and Berries is a dessert bar on Commercial Street so is in the perfect location if you're jumping off a bus like Jilly. The menu has a ‘vegan delights’ section including pancakes, ice cream and smoothies as well as a savoury vegan flatbread.

We both decided to go for something sweet and ordered a stack of pancakes with syrup, strawberries and blueberries.  Jilly had hers with vanilla ice cream and I had mine with coconut.  The guy who served us was really helpful and let me know all the vegan ice creams they had in that day; vanilla, coconut and raspberry and he let me know that they usually have mango.  With seating upstairs and downstairs it is easily accessible with a pram on the ground floor with changing facilities.  Our pancakes were delicious but the portions were a little smaller than when we had been before which was slightly disappointing.  There are plenty of dairy free milk alternatives and Jilly got her caffeine fix with a hazelnut latte.

Beans and Berries is a great place to stop for a quick coffee, a stack of pancakes or a savoury lunch. It's also a handy location if you want to pick up a takeaway coffee. It would great to see the Vegan menu extend to more savoury options and milkshakes!

If you're looking to switch to cruelty free makeup then it's definitely worth checking out Kat Von D which is a bold beauty brand that's becoming a favourite among vegans. Here's what to look out for on their website:

"Although the FDA hasn’t established a regulation for what it means to be “vegan,” we define it as as a product that does not contain any animal products or by-products, and has not been tested on animals.

Kat Von D Beauty products marked #VeganAlert indicate that the finished product is vegan.

Kat Von D Beauty never tests on animals—and never will."

You can find the Kat Von D counter in Debenhams in the Overgate Shopping centre, not far from the doors. As well as bright lipsticks and funky metallic eyeshadow palettes there is a fab selection of more 'everyday' beauty products. The staff are super helpful if you want to try anything and happy to answer any questions. I had a foundation colour match done before Christmas and didn't feel at all pressured to buy as you often do at makeup counters! Saying that, I have since bought the Lock It Liquid Foundation (great coverage) and a Tattoo Liner (perfect for precision flicks) which are now my favourite products. When we visited this month I asked to try an Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in a gorgeous pink shade called 'Mother' - now at the top of my wishlist!

We headed to Madigan's at the start of January for some Birthday tea and cake.  A cosy bookshop and cafe, it was the perfect place for a post Christmas catch up on a grey January day.

It was really quiet when we arrived mid-afternoon so we managed to get a little booth which was perfect for Milne to sleep on while we caught up.  The staff were really helpful when we asked which cakes were vegan.  There was a vegan brownie that day so we both ordered one.  Jilly went for a spiced apple tea and I had a decaf coffee.  They only do filter coffee but offer soya milk with your drinks.  The brownies were delicious and big!  Jilly's tea came in a big pot and there was plenty for her to have a cup or two and me to have a wee bit too.  My coffee came in a cafetiere and was enough for a couple of cups which is perfect for a longer catch up.  We had been for lunch before Christmas and had a delicious veggie platter with olives, hummus, veggies etc, there is also usually a couple of vegan specials on the board if you're in for a spot of lunch.

Madigan's is one of my favourite places to go with Milne, it has relaxed and cosy atmosphere and you don’t feel rushed out.  Everything is on the ground floor which makes it perfect for wheelchair and pram accessibility.  It is also one of my favourite baby changing rooms as the changing mat is low down enough that I can kneel down without hurting my back like with higher ones. This was a great place for coffee and cake but it would be great to see a few more vegan options on the menu.
