Vegan Dundee

We only had forty minutes at the end of the day for a quick coffee and we were in the Overgate Centre so decided to pop into Costa on the ground floor for a quick drink and catch up. We’ve both been to Costa a few times before to grab a coffee on the go but this is the first time we had sat in together.

I was in the mood for a hot chocolate so asked the Barista if the Costa hot chocolate was vegan, the staff didn’t know and had to look up their ingredients folder.  Once a few of them had, had a look they let me know that it was vegan but was made in a factory which handles milk. I went for a coconut hot chocolate, and although it cost extra for this milk it was definitely worth it for a super creamy hot chocolate.  Jilly got her caffeine fix with a soya latte.

We were a little bit peckish so decided to share both of the vegan cakes on offer; The Paradise Coconut and Pistachio Slice and The Oaty Jam Bake.  The Coconut slice was a little bit dry but tasty and the jam bake was really yummy. There were a few other vegan kids snack options on the counter but there were no substantial savoury options if you are looking for a bit of lunch.  There wasn’t a huge selection available but it's good to see a few vegan friendly treats at a coffee chain, especially if you're in a rush. Costa also don’t charge extra if you want soya milk which is a definite bonus. It would be great to see some vegan lunch options available for people grabbing a quick bite to eat.  As this Costa is located within the shopping centre you need to go to the centres facilities which isn’t ideal for a little one! This wasn’t our favourite spot for a vegan coffee and cake but was good for a really quick catch up.

As Dundee's first fully vegan cafe/takeaway we had been wanting to try Marwick's together for ages, both of us had been separately but thought it was time to sit in together.  We had tried to go a couple of times before but it was so busy we couldn’t get the pram in for a sit down lunch, luckily for us this time it was nice and quiet for a late lunch.

I was really hungry after a busy morning swimming with my little vegan so opted for the Mediterranean Falafel on a baked potato, it was delicious and very filling. Jilly had the Maple Cajun Jackfruit which looked fantastic, she loved it but it was a little on the spicy side for her.  Marwick's is a cute little place in the centre of Dundee and is the perfect stop off for takeaway lunch or breakfast. Jilly had been a few weeks earlier and tried the Hot Breakfast Box featuring tofu scramble and haggis-YUM.

Marwick's offers various savoury options alongside some sweet treats which can be found in their chilled section.  Too full from lunch we decided to grab a chocolate cheesecake to takeaway which was super creamy and chocolatey although a little on the small side if you're sharing like us!  Surrounded by Neal's Yard products and various vegan cookbooks, Marwick's is a great spot to chill out over some fab vegan food and drinks. It was fantastic to visit Dundee's first fully vegan cafe and we are really excited to see what else they have up their sleeves - it’s always great to eat out in a place where you can eat EVERYTHING. *Update - Marwick's Vegan Kitchen has moved to 118 Nethergate*

On Friday me and Jilly headed to the launch party for In Residence and Lovely Things.  We were delighted to get in out of the rain and even more delighted to be greeted with some delicious local apple juice. We arrived at the start of the evening but it quickly started to fill up and by the time we left it was buzzing with excited guests.

Lovely Things is a homeware and gift shop which is located in the downstairs of In Residence (ground floor access from its own side door), It is the perfect space to showcase the lovely things for sale.  We were even able to pick up a couple of gifts while we there. Gillian, the owner of In Residence was able to give us a quick tour of the upstairs eating area and discuss her exciting plans for the multifunctional space.   In Residence will soon be hosting pop up kitchens for various chefs offering up some delicious vegan friendly meals, while still providing the perfect spot for a quick bite to eat or take away lunch.

This is a dreamy space which really makes buying a gift a lovely experience.  It was a wonderful evening, with some delicious vegan canapés, stylish bar and some brilliant launch night discounts.  We can’t wait to head back for a full review soon.

We headed to Exchange Street looking for some vegan coffee and cake, we had been to Flame Tree for lunch a few weeks ago so decided to go back to an old favourite, Tea and Cake.  With vegan savoury and sweet options this cosy little cafe and bakeshop is fast becoming a regular afternoon coffee spot.

We were there mid afternoon when it was winding down and a little quieter for a chatty coffee.   The staff were very welcoming as usual and although we didn’t manage to nab the window sofa, there was plenty of room for the pram in the central seating area.  We asked the waiter for the vegan cake options that day and he let us know they had a chocolate fudge cake - when we have been before there have often been two vegan friendly cake options.  We both went for a slice of the cake and it was delicious. Jilly opted for a winter spice tea and I had a decaf oat milk latte, the waiter let me know that they also had almond and soya milk- both drinks were perfect warmers for a chilly day.

Although we were just in for cakes and coffees we had a peek at the menu and there were a few options which could be made vegan and there are usually vegan soups and specials available.  I had been in February for lunch and enjoyed the garlic & thyme pumpkin, red onion, tomato, chilli jam and rocket ciabatta panini and it was SO GOOD.  My friend had the VLT from the breakfast menu (which is served all day) and said it was delicious!!! Tea and Cake is a the perfect spot for breakfast, brunch, lunch or just some cake and coffee.  It would be great to see some more vegan options on the menu in the future. Another vegan friendly gem on Exchange Street.

We decided to brave the rain and head out for a much needed catch up, we were already in the centre of town looking for some Mother's Day cards so decided to try out Cordially Cake.  We had both been super excited to give it a try after its opening at the end of last year and Jilly had heard that there might be some vegan treats available.

Cordially Cake is an old fashioned soda shop offering various flavours of sodas, shakes and floats alongside some classic American diner specials including pancakes and waffles.   When we arrived it was quiet, which was perfect for us as there was plenty of space for the pram and to hang up our soaking clothes on the coat rack.

We asked what vegan options were available and although initially there was not much information available we were quickly greeted by Susan who was able to tell us of the wide range of vegan options.  We opted for two Ice Cream Sodas after being offered a taste of flavours. I went for the delicious Blue Razz and Jilly went for Bubblegum. Both were delicious and the syrups are all made from scratch.  We also decided to share a piece of cake and went for a cinnamon cake which was super sweet and delicious.

The staff were really helpful and let us know that they will be extending their vegan menu soon and it might even include vegan french toast!! It was a great space for a little vegan but unfortunately there was no baby changing available, however, we were assured that this is currently being worked on.  If you're looking for a sweet treat while in the centre of town, we would definitely recommend this cute American style soda shop .
