Vegan Dundee

When visiting family and friends in Aberdeen I often try to pop in to Foodstory in the West End. A veggie cafe with plenty of vegan options, they launched in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign which allowed them to create a quirky multifunctional community space which continues to grow and develop.

It was a Sunday when I most recently visited Foodstory with a friend, and we found that you can only have pancakes, coffee and cakes - not the full breakfast menu which was a bit of a shame but pancakes do make the perfect brunch so we went ahead and chose our toppings. First off you decide if you'd like one or two pancakes, then choose from dairy or soy yogurt, next, select your granola - superfood or quinoa, and finish it off with some tasty extras. I had maple syrup, chia seeds and rhubarb compote while my friend opted for date caramel with hers. The pancakes were delicious and very filling! We had some yummy coffees too, a chai latte and yogi yogi chai, they can be made from a range of dairy free milks. Foodstory offer a great selection at lunch time with options including their salad and half wraps where you can mix and match and end up with a very full plate! They also have an evening menu with tasty sounding hot pots and platters. Upstairs you will find the fab multifunctional vegan wholefoods shop space which also has gorgeous plants from The Potting Shed, workshop space and is where they run yoga classes and other events. The shop display shelving is on wheels so it can be moved around to make the space flexible, what a great idea! If you're visiting both make sure to check out the shop times as they differ to the cafe hours.

Cupcakes By Jo in Aberdeen, was one of my favourite cake stops back when I was just vegetarian so earlier this year I was delighted to hear that Jo was expanding her range to offer vegan options at the time of Veganuary. These cupcakes were so popular that they are now a regular in the counter!

When I went by Jo had two vegan options, chocolate and mint chocolate. I went for a box of four, which was £8, so I could share with the family. Unfortunately I managed to tip my box over so they were a little bashed for photos by the time I got them home, but they still tasted amazing, so creamy and chocolatey yet still light and fluffy. Even my Mum who doesn't normally like cupcakes and said she'd "try a little bit" ended up eating a whole one!

You'll find this super cute, multi award winning cupcake shop at 7A Crown Street, just off of Union Street and not far from Union Square so if you're visiting for the day it's easy to pick up a box to take home (if you can resist them on the journey). Flavours do change daily and past ones include pineapple, white chocolate, Victoria sponge, chocolate peanut butter, berries & cherries, Oreo, Biscoff, "nutella", caramel and raspberry ruffle. It's best to call ahead to check what's available if you're going out of your way. You can also find Cupcakes by Jo on Facebook and Instagram where there are regular flavour updates.

After living in Falkland in Fife for three years where there was barely any takeaway options, let alone vegan friendly places, one of the first things we did on moving into our Dundee home was check what was on offer on Just Eat. Food Temple came up and so it was one of the first things we ate in our new house and will always remind me of unpacking boxes, sitting at the wallpaper pasting table which was our temporary dining table!

Since then we've found others but it's still one of my favourites. My sister had come to stay on a lazy Sunday evening so we decided to order a 16" vegetable pizza with chips and cheese to share. I love the melty vegan cheese they use and that the pizza comes loaded with toppings, the base is lovely too. For the vegan vegetable pizza in this huge size it's £12.40 and the chips and cheese costs £3.50 so it's pretty good value for the amount of food you get.

Food Temple has a great selection of vegan choices on the menu. Pizza options include margherita, mex, funghi and vegetable but they also have pasta and risotto dishes. You can choose from extras like cheesy garlic bread, chips and mozzarella stuffed mushrooms and they even have vegan crepes for dessert! We haven't been very adventurous so always end up ordering the same as it's so good but we'll definitely have to try more in future.

You can order from Food Temple online through Scoffable or Just Eat for delivery or collection from Hilltown.

Taste of Grampian is a one day food and drink festival in the north east of Scotland, giving visitors the chance to sample a wide range of local products. Of course this isn't a vegan festival (and is in fact sponsored by a few meat companies) but I was visiting with family in the hope of finding some signs of progress in response to the growing numbers of vegans.

The festival ran from 9am-9pm on 2nd June at Thainstone, just outside Inverurie, and there were over 200 exhibitors with live music, family entertainment, demos, drinks and a craft marquee. I had a good look around and although it wasn't clear where I could expect to find vegan options from the map I was pleasantly surprised to find a few vegan brands and businesses who had expanded their ranges to include plant based options. Here are a few as featured in the photos:

  • Deliciously Dates - a Dundee based business which offers a yummy selection of energy bites, date chutneys, stuffed dates, date syrups and more.
  • Rockin Robyn's Bakery - our favourite from the Dundee farmers market! We chose some delicious rocky road cookies but you can read our cupcake review here.
  • Aunt Marie's Kitchen - traditional Scottish tablet but they had just introduced an almond based vegan one, the sample was lovely.
  • Hungry Squirrel - a wonderful selection of nut butters. We had some of the cookie dough cashew one before at Christmas, it didn't last long in our house!
  • Foodstory - Aberdeen's well known veggie cafe had a cute food truck offering coffees, lunches and brownies. I didn't get anything from here as we had plans to visit them the next day in town but it all looked very tempting.
  • Casa di Gelato - we heard that Portsoy Ice Cream were launching a new vegan salted caramel flavour but the queues were so long we didn't manage to try any! Luckily we found this little Casa di Gelato ice cream cart which had a refreshing but creamy rhubarb sorbet.
  • Cake Control - we found a tiny vegan stand selling a range of cakes and wholesome savoury options including mini macaroni pies and chickpea quiche salad boxes. We had a little picnic of these goodies for lunch!
  • Blushberry Botanicals - located in the craft tent this indie natural cosmetics brand is going to be at a few of the upcoming vegan festivals and is one to watch. The lip butters are good enough to eat and we're so excited about their new products launching soon.
There you have it! It was great to see some options among the many non vegan friendly and hopefully that will continue to change in future.

We were passing through Aboyne and had been recommended Spider on a Bicycle by a friend. We'd already had a picnic lunch that day but after a long walk it was the perfect chance to stop by for some drinks and cake. It's a lovely historic building which was the old train station waiting room.

We asked about the vegan options at the counter and were offered three types of cake and dairy alternatives for coffee. There was a fruity flapjack, energy ball (which David chose) or apple cinnamon cake (which I had). I chose a refreshing lemony lemonade and David had a very nice oat milk cappuccino. The cakes were very yummy although it would be nice to have a non fruity option too. We did take a look at the rest of the menu and there were some delicious sounding lunch and brunch options. I'd especially like to try the 'Bowl of Goodness' which is a salad bowl of quinoa, avocado, roasted sweet potato, hummus, apple, rocket, pickled red cabbage and toasted seeds. Yum! I hope we'll get the chance to visit again and explore more of the beautiful surrounding countryside and villages.
