Vegan Dundee

After a few busy visits to the new V&A we decided to book a table at Tatha for our next trip. During the opening weekend, we spotted some vegan cakes in the canteen style cafe which is downstairs in the museum. The queue for there has always been super long so it was nice to have a chilled out lunch planned at the restaurant.

We decided to share a few dishes as it all sounded so yummy! We had two sharing platters - Cannellini Bean and Leek Antipasto which came with broccoli pesto, red pepper jam, beetroot and sourdough, and the East Coast Pea Hummus which included olives, roasted walnuts and tapenade with more sourdough. We did end up with a lot of bread! The sharing platters were delicious with lots of flavour and textures but the flatbread was our favourite. From the brunchy\lunchy section of the menu, the flatbread was loaded with roasted cauliflower, tapenade, pistachios, macadamia nuts, avocado and olives. Despite having a mountain of food for just three of us, we couldn't resist trying the chocolate avocado cake for dessert. It looked amazing with its pistachio nut brittle and sprinkle of popcorn, but the menu had said popcorn ice cream so we're not sure what happened to that. It was tasty but quite pricey at £7. The savoury food was better value, as the portions were more generous so we couldn't finish it all. Tatha has a lovely calm atmosphere with its simple colour palette and stylish surroundings, perfect for a treat when you're visiting the V&A. It's so great to see such an important location offering vegan options in Dundee.

We have to admit that we are loving cooler weather and darker nights. We definitely enjoyed a long hot summer but the thought of cosying up over the next few months is really lovely. After both of us being away on holiday, we had been looking forward to a chance to relax and catch up and eat, of course. Nothing beats a cosy games night in front of the fire, and that’s exactly how our Saturday evening was spent.  Heart Space Whole Foods kindly gifted* us a basket full of delicious snacks and treats to enjoy during our games night and they did not disappoint (can a Vego bar ever disappoint?) We made a mini chocolate fondue with strawberry marshmallows (£2.70, Heart Space Whole Foods) and strawberries dipped into melted Seed and Bean Sweet Orange and Thyme Chocolate (£3.45, Heart Space Whole Foods) it was DELICIOUS. If candles, fairy lights and a dark and rainy evening wasn’t enough to get us into the autumn spirit the delicious Belvoir Spiced Ginger Punch (£3.30, Heart Space Whole Foods) definitely was, super tasty and it made the house smell delicious. We had the punch warmed and it was like a non-alcoholic hot toddy. Perfect.  After a wee sweetness overload some savoury snacks were a welcome addition to the evening and tucking into Eat Real veggie crisps and Cheeze straws ( £2.15 each, Heart Space Whole Foods) was the perfect salty snack... although they also tasted amazing dipped into the melted chocolate Ha-Ha. We had the perfect, relaxing night in with really delicious snacks, a wonderful start to a cosy autumn/winter. *We were gifted these items to try for free in exchange for this feature. All opinions are still our own.

We were delighted to be invited in for a tour of Heart Space Whole Foods on Exchange Street. Stockists of some of our favourite vegan snacks, we had a great time wandering around and talking all things food with the owner, Ian. With a store in Dundee and St Andrews, Heart Space is the place to go for vegan essentials - Vego bars are essential, right? And with their ever-expanding range of environmentally friendly household and beauty products, you can pick up your vegan essentials in a super relaxed environment. Warm and inviting, visiting the store gives you a dreamy shopping experience with lovely and knowledgeable staff you feel right at home, something you just don’t get at bigger supermarkets. There is a wide range of locally grown fruits and vegetables and fresh bread, so it’s the perfect place to stock up on everyday goods, as well as more unusual ingredients. Our favourite part of the shop was definitely the chocolate counter which had lots of delicious options including Seed and Bean and Chocolate Tree. If you are a little peckish you can also pick up a fresh juice or soup from their juice counter, which looked delicious and perfect for the hungry shopper. Heart Space has a massive range of our favourite foods and drinks. We can’t wait to try more and came home with a full basket of goodies to enjoy at our upcoming games night. We are even more delighted to be able to give our followers a 15% discount on everything in both the Dundee and the St Andrews store. All you have to do is show the voucher below at the till!

After a long and warm summer, we were both excited for a cosy catch up on a windy day. We had already tried Simpsons (while it was still ‘Tea & Cake’) but only for coffee and cake and we had been looking forward to trying out the new menu and seeing the new look for a while.

When we arrived it was quite busy, but there was a couple of tables free and space for my little vegan's pram. We arrived just after two and checked what cakes they had left. There was just one slice of the vegan chocolate cake so we asked them to put it aside for us. Everything on the menu was clearly marked vegan. We loved the new look, Simpsons has kept its cosy charm with a fresh new look and feels a little more spacious. Jilly went for the for the vegan BMBLT with portobello mushrooms instead of bacon, it was delicious but a bit on the spicy side for her so I finished it off and it was super tasty. I opted for the Buddha bowl, this is a light dish with plenty of veg, sweet potato, and apple. The quinoa in this dish was roasted in the oven-I wasn’t super keen on the crunchy texture but the dressing and leafy veg was delicious. There is a kids menu available here too and although there were no vegan options on it when we asked we were told that anything vegan on the main menu could be made as a kids portion. We finished off by sharing the last slice of chocolate cake and we both had oat milk lattes. Simpsons is a cosy and comfortable lunch spot on one of the best vegan-friendly streets. Its updated look is fresh and the menu has some great vegan options. Simpsons is still definitely one of the best spots in the city for a big slice of cake.

We're so excited for the first ever 'Vegan Week' on Great British Bake Off tomorrow. It's great to see such a huge show featuring vegan baking, and (hopefully) revealing how yummy vegan cakes can be. We thought this would be the perfect time to share some of our favourite places for cake and sweet treats that we've visited in Dundee this year so far.

1. Cordially Cake - Dundee (now closed)
80 Nethergate, DD1 4ER
Cordially Cake offer a range of vegan (and gluten free) cakes alongside their colourful shakes and brunch foods. We've tried the lemon and raspberry, coconut and bundt cakes (pictured above) in apple cinnamon and chocolate. Mmmm...

2. Marwick's - Dundee

12 Union St, DD1 4BH
100% vegan, so you can enjoy any of the sweet treats at Marwick's! Yay! Roaming Vegan Baker creates delicious tray bakes alongside their famous tablet. You'll also find pots of goodness like cheesecakes and Biscoff banoffee pie.

Avery & Co
3. Avery & Co - Dundee
34 South Tay Street, DD1 1PD
Avery & Co are well known for their amazing carrot cake! They often have other treats like rocky road, oreo cupcakes and chocolate cake.

4. The Flame Tree Cafe - Dundee

20 Exchange St, DD1 3DL
There's usually a few options here; regulars include tray bakes such as chocolate tiffin and cornflake crunch but you'll often find sponge cakes too. Oh, and keep an eye on their social media for doughnut updates! They occasionally have a delivery of all sorts of wonderful flavours of doughnuts from The Doughtnut Family.

Simpsons
5. Simpsons - Dundee
27 Exchange St, DD1 3DJ
Previously Tea and Cake, Simpsons aim to have a vegan option every day. We've had some of our favourite cake here in the past, the chocolate cake (which is so rich but still moreish) and an unusual but delicious courgette and banana cake. We're looking forward to visiting to see the new look and menu!

Bonus - Cupcakes by Jo - Aberdeen
7A Crown Street, AB11 5HANot in Dundee, of course, but if you happen to be in Aberdeen you should definitely pop past for a box to take home. Flavours do change daily and past ones include pineapple, white chocolate, Victoria sponge, chocolate peanut butter, berries & cherries, Oreo, Biscoff, "nutella", caramel and raspberry ruffle. It's best to call ahead to check what's available if you're going out of your way.

Let us know if we've missed your favourite so we can check it out!

We're back! It's been a while, as we decided to take a break for September because we both had lots on with holidays and other commitments (and didn't see each other for a whole month). We have so much planned for the rest of the year though, and can't wait to share our upcoming posts with you all. Before our break, I visited Jushi, a juice and sushi bar near the university, for a busy day lunch break. They recently moved to this new premises to include a seating area which is surrounded by a mix of industrial and natural style.

I had a voucher from itison for two, so we asked the helpful owner what vegan options this included. We were told that it was the Teriyaki tofu rice box, but more will be added to the menu very soon which is exciting! The tofu was delicious and the portions were very generous, great for a quick but satisfying lunch on a packed day. We decided to order some juice too as the menu looked so tempting. Although some of the smoothies have frozen yogurt and sorbet in them, they can all be made vegan. I went for the Fruity Sensation which was a refreshing blend of mango, peach, passionfruit and apple. David had a Berry Crush which was really tasty too. Jushi, of course, has a huge selection of sushi on offer. We didn't try any on our visit but there are vegan options and you can even order platters if you're looking for catering. I hope we'll be back to try some soon!
