Vegan Dundee

I'm sure most vegans know of Mono in Glasgow, but we thought it'd be good to share it on here for anyone who's yet to visit! Mono is a completely vegan café bar in Glasgow's Merchant City which also hosts events and has its own in-house record store - monorail music.

We've tried to eat at Mono before but without a booking at the weekend didn't have any luck! This time we went on a Monday lunchtime and didn't have any problems getting a table although it was still busy. It's always exciting to be somewhere where you can eat everything on the menu! There's loads of pub classics and tempting junk food options to choose from. I decided to have macaroni cheese with chips (no surprise!) and my fellow diners went for the black pudding pizza and the sausage supper. It did take a while for our food to arrive but it was worth the wait! Everything was really tasty - proper comfort food. The chips were so good, especially with the creamy macaroni... Yum! The portions were pretty generous so as it was lunchtime we didn't manage any dessert sadly. We'll just have to come back another time!

Muchacho opened last year, on the Nethergate, across the road from Wee Mexico. Its central location makes it handy for picking up some Mexican street food. It stands out with its bright exterior and neon lights and seemed to be very popular with school kids when we popped in for lunch.

The decor is really bold and funky, with festoon lights and greenery that gives it a bit of an outdoors feel. It wasn't clear what vegan options there were at first glance but the staff were happy to help explain the menu. Basically, if you choose the roasted vegetable filling then anything can be made vegan minus the cheese and sour cream. I had a regular burrito and my friend had soft flour tacos. We chose the milder salsas - Pico de Gallo and Miss Elenita. Our food was made fresh and was quite tasty, I do usually prefer Mexican food with vegan cheese and sour cream but it still had really nice flavours. My only issue was that as there isn't a substitute for those ingredients, it would be fairer to get a small discount when ordering vegan. If you're looking for a more indulgent treat, and enjoy vegan dairy alternatives, then it's worth checking out Wee Mexico. Muchacho is still a great spot for a quick lunch and it definitely feels a bit of a healthy option.

My parents were staying in Anstruther for the week when my Mum spotted this little tearoom which she was surprised to find had vegan options on the menu. So, of course, when I went to visit them for the day we had to go and check it out! It's located on Shore Street, just across from the harbour. The ideal location for a spot of afternoon tea after a walk around the town.

Curiousiteas is a tiny wee tearoom, so it's best to book if you're planning a trip. It's filled with vintage knick knacks, I loved all the mirrors on the ceiling! When you arrive you can ask for the 'tea menu' which is a dish of little loose leaf tea blend samples with cute little labels so you can smell them and choose your favourite to order. I had the rhubarb infusion which was lovely and sweet. We were just visiting for tea and cake but there were two vegan sandwich options on the menu which sounded delicious - chickpea mash & lime pickle, or curly kale and cashew pesto. There's a cabinet filled with homemade cakes, so we asked which were vegan and were told it was the lemon cake. The owner, who was very happy to help, said there's usually at least one vegan-friendly option. My slice of lemon cake wasn't very photogenic but that didn't matter as it was so yummy! Especially the buttercream... mmmm. If it's a sunny day then you can get some treats to takeaway which would be perfect for a wee picnic along the coast.
