Vegan Dundee

We were super excited to be invited* to the soft launch of Wee Slice last week, brought to you by the team behind one of our favourites - Wee Mexico. This isn't our usual review format as there are a few things that will be changing so we'll pop back after the official opening to check in again... any excuse for more pizza! Falda was very sad to miss out as she was on holiday but David stepped in as an enthusiastic replacement and we had a fab time trying out the vegan menu.

It's getting a lot easier to find vegan pizza in Dundee now, but Wee Slice isn't just your usual pizza place. It's a 'Hip Hop Pizza Shop' with locally stocked bar, unique topping combos, vegan and gluten-free options, and a hip hop soundtrack. The pizzas are going to be a massive 20" and are sold by the slice which gives you the chance to grab a quick lunch or try a few different ones if you're hungrier. You'll also be able to order whole pizzas which would be perfect for a pizza party.

There were three vegan options on the menu with a fourth to be added - we'll tell you all about them in a future post but for now I'll just let you know the important thing, that they were all delicious!
Oh and look out for the vegan dips!! To drink, there was lots to choose from and the staff can actually tell you what's vegan. They're even going to add some cocktails soon.
Wee Slice's official opening is tomorrow (28th May) - you can check out the
Facebook event here. Thanks for having us along Ben and James! Can't wait to come back soon.

While Falda was on holiday I visited Sweetpea Cafe in Broughty Ferry for lunch with my (newly vegan) friend Sam Baxter Art as guest blogger. There wasn't a menu as everything is on display in the counter but it's clearly labelled and there was a lot to choose from!

We decided to share a couple of things as they all looked so good. There was a jackfruit sweet potato wrap, and spiced roast vegetable tart. Both were served with beautiful, colourful salads topped with flowers, the wrap with crisps and the tart with vegan coleslaw which is always a bonus! They were delicious, enough of a treat to be comfort food but still felt healthy.

Sam had a Teapigs berry tea and I had an oat milk latte with chai syrup. There was also soya and coconut milk to choose from for hot drinks. Sweetpea Cafe offer a lot of vegan sweet options too, we had a pineapple crumble cakey thing which was very tasty. They also had ginger tiffin, scones, and a chocolatey nut thing.

Hopefully we can visit again soon since the menu changes all the time (we spotted vegan sausage rolls on the Sweetpea Cafe Instagram) and Falda doesn't want to miss out!

Papa John's launched vegan cheese at the start of the year to the cheers of vegan pizza lovers everywhere. They quickly sold out and it took a while to become regularly available again. It's back on the menu now with more items having being added since which is always exciting to see!

Our favourite offer is 'buy one get one free when you buy a side order' which is available for delivery. You can just choose regular buy one get one free (no side) if you're happy to collect. This makes it a lot better value and there's quite a lot of other offers to choose from too. At the time of writing, there are four vegan pizzas on the menu, and 3 sides. We decided to have the Vegan Sheese and Tomato, a Vegan Sheese Garden Party and a side of Vegan Sheese Crinkle Wedges. There's also hot pepper passion and the new hot dog pizzas!

Our order arrived quickly and piping hot (which is always a bonus when you have to take photos!). The pizzas were delicious, the Sheese is a really great flavour compared to a lot of vegan cheeses. It's like a mix between a mozzarella and cheddar and a really convincing texture. I don't think I'd ever had a Papa John's pizza before going vegan, but I was surprised to find myself eating the crusts (which I don't often do) as the base and sauce were so tasty! The wedges were yummy too but a bit squishy, it'd be nice if they were crispier.

Papa John's don't currently offer any gluten free pizza bases, or vegan desserts. It would be great to see some vegan-friendly hot desserts added, like their giant choc chip cookie. Hopefully one day soon!

Makers for Maggie's Spring Market might not be a "vegan event" but once we heard there would be vegan rocky road brownies there we knew we had to tell you about it! Taking place on Sunday 12th May from 11am-4pm at Discovery Point, Makers for Maggie's returns for its third market with a fantastic line up of local and regional designers, artists and makers all supporting Maggie's Cancer Centre in Dundee. I'll be there with my JillyJilly goodies, including 'vegan' travel cups and mugs. You'll also find The Black Cat Soap House with their range of vegan soaps, shampoo bars and skincare. Make sure to look out for The Candle Bothy too, for a collection of soy wax candles with lovely fresh scents.

As well as stalls, you'll find a pop-up tea room, creative activities, mini beauty treatments and information about cancer support. Our favourites, Sorbus Coffee will be there, with Minor Figures oat milk and Nitro cold brews, Almighty Foods chocolate bars and Rapscallion Sodas. They won't be selling their brownies but that's because Artisana Brownies will be bringing their vegan rocky road slices, we can't wait to try them!

Artisana Brownies will also be selling their recently launched hot chocolate, the signature and dark hot chocolates are both vegan. We were kindly gifted some to try by Sophie who is organising the market, and it is delicious! Super chocolately, a really indulgent treat. You can also make a luxury chilled chocolate milk - "make up the hot chocolate as usual and allow to cool in a glass bottle. Once cool transfer to the fridge for a few hours. Add ice to a glass and pour the thick chilled chocolate over".

Entry is a £1 donation to Maggie's.
